I grew up in New York, but I first visited Minnesota in the early-1980’s and moved to the Twin Cities in 1989. One building that made an indelible mark from my first visit to Minnesota is Butler Square. First as a tourist, and later working as an architect in a nearby office in the Warehouse District, I came to love and appreciate the heavy timber interior structure, and the marvelous open clear space that was carved into it from its reuse for office and retail businesses. I was especially fond of the sculptured acrobat “flying” up high above, suspended from the wooden structure. I passed through the atrium daily during the work week, and never tired of the joy expressed within this architectural design!
