Woolworth’s Dime Store on 7th Street, downtown St. Paul

St. Paul, MN
Story by Denise S

When I was a child in the late 50’s early 60’s my grandmother and I would take the bus downtown. That in itself was an adventure but we would always make a stop at the Woolworth’s lunch counter as part of our day. As I remember it there was some type of conveyer belt where the waitress would place the dirty dishes, and they would magically disappear into the kitchen. I was fascinated by this and to this day I credit that experience for my interest in working in food service. I went on to hold many positions over the years in various food service operations, even owning my own restaurant for 13 years! I loved my career choice and can’t help but feel that the Woolworth’s lunch counter was the fuel that ignited my interest!
