The Helen and Phillip Duff House

Woodland, MN
Story by Gar H

Architectural historian Larry Millett and I agree, the Duff House, designed by Architects Winston and Elizabeth Close, was their finest work. Instead of the typical square Mid Century Modern grid, the Duffs asked the Closes to do something different. A diamond grid floorplan was the result. The home’s swooping roof overhangs were also triangular/diamond shaped. Sheathed in naturally weathered Redwood, it was a graceful structure. Unfortunately, it fell into foreclosure and was sold to a developer/contractor who replaced it with a MacMansion. If only there was a fund to buy and hold these treasures until a buyer could be found!
