To me, the Hinkly House stands as a symbol of elegance, innovation, hospitality and dedication to the community that our early leaders stood for. The Hinkly family were well-educated, forward thinking, entrepreneurs. The thoughtfulness that went into the family home is demonstrated from top to bottom, with the two- story attic completed with a trapeze for the children, stained glass windows,
parquet flooring, carved cupboard doors, electric lights, indoor plumbing, and an
egress window in the basement as well as a tunnel. The lions guarding the porch
symbolizes the courage they held high. Their emphasis on education and culture is highlighted by the hundreds of books, collage of college pennants, and the music room and instruments.
RB Hinkly not only started many businesses that benefited Luverne, but also
served as mayor and was active in city and county affairs. May was also active in
community and church affairs. I believe the family demonstrated the traits and generous spirit that help to grow a community into a vibrant, safe place to live and grow. Our community is blessed to have the spirit they left behind and the beautiful home that symbolizes it.
I think it is important for us to share this outstanding home and its story with the
public.
